Mario Teaches Typing was released by Interplay Productions in 1992 and quickly became one of the most recognisable edutainment titles of the MS-DOS era.

The idea came from Interplay founder Brian Fargo, who watched Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing dominate the educational software market and figured a typing game starring Mario could do the same for kids — and he was right. The original sold over 800,000 copies, and an enhanced CD-ROM version followed in 1994.

The game holds a weird little place in Mario history too. The 1992 floppy release was the very first time Mario actually spoke in a video game - originally voiced by Ronald B. Ruben, then famously re-recorded by Charles Martinet for the 1994 CD-ROM.

Martinet went on to voice Mario for the next 30+ years, so technically this humble typing tutor is where his iconic "It's-a me, Mario!" career started.

The soundtrack? All pulled straight from Super Mario World.

Three decades later the game still works because the concept still works: you're not staring at a boring typing drill, you're keeping Mario alive.
